Performance nerves wracked my gut the next day. I'd been awake since five A.M, fiddling with my dress, my cello, ensuring I had everything I could possibly need for the matinee. Then I checked again. I changed my mind on which dress to wear twice, oscillating between a deep sapphire blue that matched my eyes, or a deep red dress that made my skin look like honey. In the end, I decided on the red. I wanted to make people stand up and take notice, and I was definitely eye-catching in the red silk dress, with its high neckline and full A-line skirt that ended at my ankles. I put my normal black performance outfit in the bag as well.
At nine A.M, I was trying to swallow a banana past the nerves clogging my chest, when there was a knock at the door. I breathed an audible sigh of relief. Knox was as punctual as usual. Today, he wasn't dressed for the office, but for the symphony. A Matinee wasn’t as formal as the evening symphony sessions, so while he was dressed in a beautifully tailored black sports coat and crisp white dress shirt, he paired it with dark blue jeans that hugged the delicious muscles of his thighs. I wheeled the cello case in front of me to create a physical barrier between us. I was seriously starting to worry that I may lose all my good reasoning and pull him into my apartment, ravishing him until my suddenly crazed libido is satiated.
His wicked grin didn’t help. “Good morning, Harper. Here let me carry that down the stairs for you.”
I smiled goofily at him. “Thanks. And thank you again for the lift. Usually I have to take the train, and getting the cello up and down the stairs at the subway station is tedious.” I joined him in the hall, pulling the door shut behind me. There were three deadbolts on the doors, and they'd all lock automatically when it closed. You could never be too safe living alone. But the one time I locked myself out of my apartment had been a nightmare.
When I was ensconced in the luxury of Knox's car, I let myself unwind a little. I still had the viewing at RecoMem to attend, and that deserved my whole attention.
“I think if you jiggle that leg any more, it's going to fall off,” Knox commented as he pulled into traffic. “Are you nervous about the memory viewing or your solo?”
In all honesty, it was a little bit of both. I was worried that whatever was coming at the viewing would leave me raw for the performance. God knows, there had been some crazy revelations over the last couple of days. I didn't know if I had it in me to see something terrible and then perform as if nothing happened. I couldn't cancel the viewing either. I needed to know what was going to happen. It was like I knew the final chapter of Mom’s story, but I was desperate to discover what happened in the beginning.
